Biography

Achille Mbembe is a Cameroonian historian, philosopher and political theorist whose work holds a prominent place in postcolonial studies and contemporary reflection on sovereignty, race and violence. He holds a doctorate in History from the Sorbonne and has pursued an international research and teaching career associated, among other institutions, with the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

In On the Postcolony (2001), he examined historical and everyday forms of power in African societies following colonisation, challenging reductive readings of postcolonial experience. His essay Necropolitics (2003), later developed into a book, introduced the concept of necropolitics to analyse the conditions under which power subjects populations to death and extreme forms of exposure to violence.

In Critique of Black Reason (2013), Out of the Dark Night and other works, he investigated the genealogies of racialisation, the limits of colonial imaginaries and the possibility of shared political horizons beyond their historical divisions. His thought connects African history with global questions concerning borders, democracy, humanity and the planet's future.
