The Beginning of Infinity

Explanations That Transform the World

Author David Deutsch

Synopsis

What kind of knowledge makes it possible to transform the world, and why do some explanations open up possibilities that once seemed nonexistent? In The Beginning of Infinity, David Deutsch develops a philosophy of progress grounded in a defense of scientific explanation. Against the mere accumulation of data or prediction without understanding, he argues that knowledge grows when we formulate conjectures capable of addressing problems and subject them to rigorous criticism. Fallibility is not an accidental weakness of reason: it is the condition that makes correcting errors and learning possible.

The book extends Karl Popper's epistemological tradition and connects it with physics, evolutionary theory, computation, and the history of ideas. Deutsch distinguishes explanations that are hard to vary without losing their explanatory power from those that can be adjusted to accommodate any result. In his view, this marks a decisive difference between science and narratives that seem to explain everything because they actually put very little at risk. To explain is not to possess final certainty, but to have theories that help us understand why things are as they are and that can be improved.

On that basis, the author undertakes an extraordinarily broad investigation: the universality of certain forms of knowledge, creativity, cultural evolution, artificial intelligence, the foundations of quantum physics, the meaning of optimism, and the possibility of solving problems we do not yet know how to formulate. His defense of a particular interpretation of quantum mechanics, among other debatable positions, should be read as part of his intellectual system, not as established scientific consensus.

The idea of infinity is not a naïve prediction of automatic progress. Deutsch holds that the limits to the growth of knowledge are not predetermined by some supposed essential incapacity of human beings, but acknowledges that advances depend on institutions, critical habits, and cultural dispositions capable of keeping the possibility of correction open. Wherever error becomes dogma and criticism is suppressed, progress can come to a halt.

Published in 2011, The Beginning of Infinity occupies a distinctive place between popular science and the philosophy of the Enlightenment. Its most provocative achievement is to reverse the customary question: not only what can we know, but what transformations become possible when we learn to create better explanations?
