Bananas, Beaches and Bases
Making Feminist Sense of International Politics
Synopsis
Who appears on the map of international politics, and who has been pushed off it? In Bananas, Beaches & Bases, Cynthia Enloe overturns the conventions of a discipline accustomed to looking at foreign ministries, armies, and treaties. Her apparently simple question produces a change of scale: where are women when global power is constructed, and what happens to our explanations of that power when we examine their work, movements, and everyday lives?
Enloe traces the connections among export economies, international tourism, military bases, domestic service, and nationalism. Bananas point to production chains and labor hierarchies; beaches to tourist industries structured by gender inequalities; bases to the social fabric that sustains a military presence on foreign territory. Diplomats’ wives, domestic workers, factory workers, and women whose lives are bound up with military enclaves cease to be background figures in the external history of states and become indispensable actors in its functioning.
The intervention is conceptual as well as empirical. What is presented as private, domestic, or irrelevant has international consequences, while nationalism, militarism, and ostensibly neutral institutions rest on historically constructed ideas of masculinity and femininity. Geopolitics, Enloe suggests, is also reproduced through routines, expectations, and forms of dependence that conventional theory rarely sees.
First published in 1989, the book opened a decisive path for feminist approaches to international relations. Its importance lies less in adding women to an existing narrative than in changing what counts as a legitimate explanation of power. Later revisions extended its reach to other settings of globalization, but the intellectual gesture of the first edition remains the same: making politics visible where theory had previously refused to look.
